Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of R.T. Erdogan’s populism, which undermined the already fragile autonomous institutions of Turkey and paved the way for the curtailment of reforms and inconsistent economic policy. The article claims that the religious-nationalist populism of R.T. Erdogan was one of the main factors of the current political and economic crisis in Turkey. Moreover, his populist rhetoric paved the way for curtailing reforms and inconsistent economic policies. Taken together, the actions of the head of state led to a deterioration in macroeconomic indicators, including rampant inflation, growing public debt, mass unemployment, rising poverty and a deep currency shock.
