TRADE BALANCE AND NATIONAL INTERESTS: PROTECTIONISM IN THE PRE-CAPITALIST ERA

Abstract
In the article, the author examines the influence of Russia’s national interests on protectionist policy in the pre-capitalist era. The motives of foreign trade restrictions aimed at maintaining the trade balance and ensuring economic independence are analyzed. By analyzing and interpreting historical sources, the author seeks to uncover the complex interaction between trade, economy and national interests. The study provides a better understanding of the evolution of economic strategy and awareness of national interests in pre-capitalist Russia.
