Abstract

The article examines the conditions of admission and subsequent settlement of German colonists in Bessarabia in the 19th century. It is shown that the resettlement policy of the Russian Empire was connected with the tasks of economic development and the strengthening of the border region. Particular attention is paid to the legal status of German colonists, the privileges granted to them, quarantine procedures, the system of self-government, and changes in the nature of land ownership after the abolition of colonist privileges in 1871. Based on published sources and archival materials, the article analyzes the growth of landholdings owned by German colonists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as the reaction of the imperial administration to this process.
