Abstract

The article is devoted to the regional press of the Ulyanovsk Region during the “Thaw”. Based on newspapers and archival documents, it examines the main thematic areas, genre forms, and features of editorial practice in local Soviet periodicals in 1957–1961. Thematic and sourcebased analysis of newspaper publications and archival materials makes it possible to identify the key areas of the regional newspaper agenda. The article shows that the Ulyanovsk press paid increasing attention to everyday life, work, family, moral character, and local problems. At the same time, newspapers retained their party-ideological and mobilizing function, shaped the image of proper Soviet behavior, and served as an instrument of public influence. The article concludes that regional press during the “Thaw” had a dual character: thematic and genre renewal was combined with the preservation of the basic principles of the Soviet newspaper system.
